The focus of attachment theory is on long-term attachments and interactions between people, such as those between a parent and child. It is a psychological justification for interpersonal relationships and emotional ties.

According to this, humans have a natural need to form ties with their caregivers while they are young. These early connections can still have an impact on attachments later in life, the early ties created by children with their caregivers have a profound impact that lasts a lifetime.

Usually it is noticed that while being pregnant, if the mother is living up a healthy and balanced life, it positively affects the health of the child as well. They live a stronger mental as well as physical health. Whereas, if the mother is suffering from any kind of depression, it may take time to bond with the baby.

According to the National Library of Medicine, around one in seven women can develop postpartum depression (PPD), which makes it difficult for them to form close relationships. Less frequently do they engage in play with their infants, make eye contact, or converse in an engaging manner. Babies may consequently experience anxiety and terror. Infants may become withdrawn, whiny, or stop responding to people altogether.

Young children’s contact with adults influences how their brain develops. Taking care of a child at this age requires effort and creativity, but depressed parents are more likely to feel exhausted, irritated, and easily frustrated. As a result, their kids struggle to control their own emotions, comply with instructions, and develop problem-solving abilities.

Although having depression as a parent does not necessarily put your child at risk for having problems, it does imply that you may need to get support in order to find a therapy, treatment, or support system that is appropriate for you and your family. Don’t hesitate in asking for help if you feel depressed, it is important not only for you to come out of it, but it is very important for a healthy growth and development of your child.
